ashley looked up, green eyes watching him beseechingly. tell me what happened. she pleaded. please, tex. i can help you. she said softly, raising her hand to barely touch the surface of his face. there was hurt in her own orbs from the pain she saw in his. she hated it to see him like this, suffering in his silent agony. she wanted to let him know that he'd still be stronger to her than anything else in the world, even if he felt the pain of the memories. she wanted to let him know that it would only hurt him more to keep it bottled up. she wanted him to know that it hurt her to see him like this.

Tex pulled her back slightly, looking deeply into her eyes. His own eyes were hard and locked, untouchable. The memories were far in his mind, were they would always stay. What are you talking about Ashley? He asked, lying so well that he was sure that she wouldn't know that he had.

ashley stared up at him, confused and hurt. here she was thinking that tex had been abused also. that he could help her through the one thing that she could never understand. never mind. she cried softly, stumbling away from him to the couch, flinging herself down before forcing herself to watch the television once more; a weak attempt to get him out of her mind.

Suddenly, he felt the strongest urge to hold her, and tell her everything, anything, but he wouldn't allow himself too. He couldn't tell anyone, it was his burden to bear and he had bore it for eight years. He would never tell anyone, no matter what happened. Even if it ruined his relationship. No one would ever really know what had happened that night so many years ago. Not the police, not Colt, not Reno. Only Novalle. But she wasn't supposed to know, he had tried to protect her from his father, even though they were both only teenagers at the time. Novalle had kept her promise though, no one but her and him knew the secrets of a dark November night whrn Tex's father died, and it would stay that way. If Novalle had only stayed home, then none of it would have happened.

so you weren't abused, too? she sobbed, words muffled by her pillow but still audible. there were no words to explain the hurt she was feeling at the moment. she felt like she had been lied to. lied to by someone she cared deeply about.

Tex sighed and sat down at the end of the couch, bending over and clutching his head as he felt a headache coming on. He knew that he wasn't going to tell her and she knew that he had lied already. He wouldn't do it again. He sat up, and looked at Ashley's crying figure, then bent down, grabbing his hat off the floor. He replaced it to his head, making sure that he didn't look at Ashley, she didn't need to see the pain in his eyes. She wouldn't have understood how much it tore him for her to go on like this when he knew there was simply no way for him to let her know what had happened. Because once it was out, it would be out, and nothing in the world would be able to hide the horrible truth. He stopped himself before he thought the last part, the truth. No, it hadn't been his fault. He knew it, Novalle knew it, the police thought it. None of them were sure. Not really. The investigation had been closed, but it was wrong. The file was full of well told lies, lies that the police chief had never believed, but everyone had known Robert LaHaye, he was a drunk ever since his wife died, and they knew he beat his son whenever he crossed his path. They all figured he had gotten what he deserved, that's why it was classified as an accident, not a homicide. Any one that didn't truly know Robert would have fought to send the kid away to an aslum or, at least, juvenile hall, but everyone in the small town had known him, too well. Some pitied him, some out right hated him. None loved him. So the kid had gotten off free, and escaped his first chance. He had never returned. Tex slowly shut the memories out of his mind as he walked to the door, stopping awkwardly before he left. Ashley, I've got some stuff to do before dark, I'll call you later. He said, his voice strange, thick and heavy with emotion and fear, fear that she'd hate him for what he had to do. He then turned, and disappeared out the door without looking back.

ashley woke up, rolling over to the side of her bed. hello? she mumbled groggily. then, suddenly remembering that tex said he would call her later, she straightened up. tex? she said, sounding normal once more.

Tex heard Ashley pick uo the phone, and he smiled slightly in the darkness of Colt's living room. He had wanted to call her earlier, but he had waited, waited until he was sure that he wouldn't tell her everything. He ran his hands through his hair as he sat there, silent for a second. Hey, Baby. Did I wake you up? He asked, his voice strange, slightly from whiskey, slightly from his emotions that he never allowed to surface. He knew that he couldn't tell her, wouldn't tell her. Hopefully, by now, she would have forgotten. When he got home, he had decided not to call her, or even speak to her for a few days, until she forgot, until they could all forget, but he hadn't been able to stay away from her. He couldn't stop. She was all he thought about, and, knowing that he had hurt her was tearing him apart. He knew he couldn't tell her, he knew she wouldn't forgive him if he didn't. What was he to do? He searched for the answer at the bottom of a whickey bottle, taking up the habit that he had put behind himself for two years. Colt had found him, just like he had before, in the alley beside a bar, ready to die from alcohol poisoning. He'd already been to the hospital, he'd already had his stomach pumped, and Colt was asleep again, but Tex was left to sit up awake, unable to sleep, unable to do anything but wait, wait and see if he could slowly kill the emotions that bubbled up in him. None of it had worked, so he called her, hoping to make things right.

ashley listened closely to his words, playing them over and over again inside her head. yeah, but never mind that. she said, getting out of bed. tex, are you drunk? she said, sounding worried about him. because if you are, i'm coming over there right now. she said threateningly. and you're going to tell me what happened if it's hurting you this much. she murmered, more gently this time.

Tex heard her, and knew she was serious. No, no I'm not drunk. I love you, Ashley, and, I don't wanna hurt you. He spoke with ernest as he murmered the words into the phone. It was true, he wasn't drunk anymore. He would just have a bad hangover the next day. It was also true that he didn't want to hurt her, for he did love her, and, if she knew everything that happened, she would be hurt, and angry that she had been decieved. He shifted on the couch, peering through the darkness as he saw Novalle close the door to her room. She'd been eavesdropping, he knew, otherwise she wouldn't be so sneaky. He sighed, knowing that she knew what was going on. He wondered if she would keep her mouth shut, or, she would tell Ashley herself what had happened that night. He knew that she would do it, if she thought it was best for him, and he knew that he would never forgive her if she did, he was pretty sure she knew it too. Ashley, nothings hurting me. I...just love you, you have to know how much. I mean, I really really love you, Ashley. He mumbled, hiding the slur to his voice.

ashley sighed. even if you aren't drunk, something's up. she said softly. why don't you come back over here? she pleaded softly. she sighed as he spoke once more. he wasn't about to tell her, and she knew it. i love you too, tex. but does being engaged mean anything? she said, voice raising once more. please. i have to know these things. she murmered.

He knew it had already started. She would use their marriage and their engagement to pry information from him. Suddenly his fear turned to anger, and he bit back curse words that threatened to bubble up his throat. Certainly, cursing at her wouldn't help. He was trapped, and he knew it. Was this marriage a mistake, like their child? No, Bella wouldn't be a mistake, she would be a perfect angel. But what of their marriage. I'll stay where I feel like stayin', Mrs. LaHaye. He growled, his slur coming back to his angry words. He didn't know why he should take his anger out on her, he was only mad at himself. He knew he was simply finding an outlet, and he knew it wasn't right, and he knew it was going to hurt her, but he did it anyway, not knowing any other way to make her forget what had happened.

ashley fell back to the bed, almost shocked by what he said. oh...okay. she said, hating how weak she sounded. she was fighting back the tears now. so maybe she was being a bit over dramatic. but it sounded like...he didn't care anymore. and she was scared for that to happen. j..j..just tell me if you don't feel l..like talking. she stuttered, the tears beginning to roll down her face. amy had left for awhile and now she was all alone in the huge house, feeling very alone and empty. she was beginning to fear what would happen once more now that tex wasn't with her. and now her fear was growing into desperation since he seemed not to care any longer. had it all just been an act so her sister didn't get angry? ashley didn't know anymore.
