Novalle smiled and kissed him back, but nothing like before. It was just a quick peck, nothing to get grouchy about, but Colt got grouchy anyway. He bristled slightly and glared at Jake again, remembering his mission and cursing his stomach and the pizza as he realized he'd been tricked. Novalle, why don't you go get me a cup of water. I'm kinda thirsty. He growled, his eyes never leaving the bold guy. What was his name? Oh well, that didn't matter, the less he knew, the less guilty he'd feel about kicking him...erm...hiney. ;D

"colt, why are you getting angry about random things like this? i'm sure you've kissed your girlfriend before. it's not a sin. when are you going to see that i'm not faking this. i love novalle. isn't it enough for me to be saying that? i know a million guys who wouldn't be caught dead admitting that." he said, watching novalle stand to leave. he didn't mind if she left, he wasn't going to fight colt. he was going to try his hardest to be mature.

Colt stood up as well, waiting until Novalle walked into the kitchen before he turned back to Jake. It's differnt, my girlfriend knows what she wants and she works for it. Novalle's too young to know the difference between puppy love and being in love, and I think you are too. Also, she's my baby sister and you'll keep your hands off of her. He said through gritted teeth, the thought of Jake kissing the sister that he had always fiercly protected almost making him explode with rage.

jake looked toward colt calmly. "i'll agree to the part about your girlfriend. she's a fabulous, generous person and you're lucky to have her." he said, remembering that amy was helping pay for his rent in an apartment until he could buy his own house. "but don't you think you owe it to your sister to give her a bit more credit? she's not a little girl anymore, colt. let her have a taste of freedom." he said, watching colt closely, still waiting for the first initial punch he knew would eventually come.

Colt shook his head. I've raised her by myself for eight years, I don't need some good-for-nothing boy telling me how to do my job. His voice raised, a bit louder as his face flushed, showing the anger he felt and how close he was to releasing it all.

"alright." jake said, looking away. if that was the way colt wanted it, fine. but he wouldn't stop coming around, especially with colt this protective. he would just have to get him used to his sister having a boyfriend. "did you think your sister was never going to grow up? did you want her to get old and never marry?" he said.

Colt shook his head, secretly knowing that he was being ridiculous, but unable to stop himself. No, I knew she'd grow up, and I knew she'd get married, but when she's old enough, she'll marry a man, not some guy who comes up out of the blue whispering promises in her ears. He said, no longer angry, just stating what he had believed for so long.

"well if that's the way it happens, why are you pushing it away? if amy had come to you in a different way than she had, would you have pushed her away? waited for someone else to come along?" jake said calmly, sensing that he was slowly becoming less and less angry.

Colt's anger flared up again, but not as hotly as it had before. He pointed a strong finger at Jake, staring at him with blunt hatred. You shut your god****ed mouth about Amy. It's different. We both knew what we were gettin' ourselves into. We'd both been down that road before. Novalle hasn't and it's gonna stay that way. Understand? He said, still glaring at the bold guy in front of him. He would never admit it to another soul, not even Amy, but he did respect the guy for standing up for a woman he believed he loved.

jake sighed. "okay. it's different about amy." he said. obviously colt wasn't going to see his way tonight, even if he did find a way to make his point of view relate to him. "so how are tex and ashley doing?" he said, attempting to change the subject.

Colt stayed standing up, glaring at him. Who are you? He asked, his voice still full of anger. Who was the man that stood before him, who knew Ashley, Amy, and Tex. Was he somehow related to Amy? Or was he simply a well informed gossip, or, even worst, a strange stalker?

ooc: oops, haven't replied in forever.
'jacob henly. nice to meet you.' he said cooly, crossing his arms, amber eyes calm and serene. 'amy's helping pay my apartment rent until i can buy a house. we were friends in junior high.' he said, leaving out the part that he had been amy's boyfriend in ninth grade. colt wouldn't like to hear about that, and he'd find out eventually. 'have you seen bella lately?' he said.

Colt still stood there, glaring at him. Novalle stood silently in the kitchen, listening for the voices that were angry and calm. She held her breath, waiting. She was certain that Colt would calm down pretty soon, but she wasn't sure how hard it would take. If Colt had known how she had acted earlier, she was certain that it would all be over quickly, but, if he'd give Jake a chance, she was certain that he'd come to be his friend.
Colt crossed his thick arms over his chest, watching him. It's none of your concern when I last saw my niece. He said, pratically growling. He hadn't seen Bella since she was born, and, though he did feel bad about it, there wasn't much he could do. He was too busy working, trying to find a way to support Amy so they could get married.

jake shrugged. 'whatever you say, man.' he said, shrugging. he stood up to go past colt and into the kitchen. he entered the room, wrapping his arms around her before kissing her sweetly. 'you can come in there, if he minds, i'll take care of it.' he said softly.

Colt watched him as he left, wanting to go after him and teach him to keep his hands off his baby sister, but he knew it wouldn't do any good. Novalle was a pretty girl, no, woman, now and she was going to make her own choices. As he stood there, knowing there was nothing he could do, he felt as if he had aged twenty years. All the anger left him, leaving his eyes strangely hollow and his body weak. He had spent his entire life caring for Novalle, trying to teach her right from wrong, trying to help her develop her life so she wouldn't have to waste hers as he had. He was almost 26 now, and he had worked every day of his life for everything he had. He hadn't wanted that for Novalle. He had wanted her to have everything, never to have to break her back working for a future that would never be hers anyways. He felt as if he had lost an important fight as he turned away and sauntered to his room, shutting the door softly behind him. He had never been good at losing, it wasn't something that came to him. He was used to fighting, struggling to succeed, but, now, he found that he just didn't have the will to fight. If he ran Jake off, Novalle would be heart-broken and she would hate him, as she always had in the past. He couldn't handle that now. He didn't know how he had handled it before, but he certainly couldn't do it now. With a muttered curse, he sat down on the edge of his bed, all of his muscles sore from the day of work, and he held his head in his hands, rubbing his eyes and his face, trying to remove the bone-deep wariness that had settled on him. It was useless. He threw his hat aside and removed his shirt and jeans and slid between the covers of the bed, but sleep still wouldn't come to him, not tonight at least.
Novalle smiled, wrapping her arms around him and kissing him back. She was certain that it would all be fine from here on. After all, Jake hadn't allowed himself to be intimidated by Colt. He had stood up to him, and now it would all be fine. Slipping her arms around him, she followed him back into the living room, but was suprised to see Colt retreating to his room, rubbing his head as he went. She was even more suprised when the door shut with a soft click instead of a resounding slam. Everything about his slumped body had shocked her. He didn't look like she had always known him to. He didn't look strong, rather, he looked weak, defeated. Turning to Jake, she smiled hesitantly, knowing that Colt wouldn't trouble them anymore. She kissed his cheek softly.
